As part of Holkham National Nature Reserve the beach is home to large flocks of wintering birds and is an important site for breeding Little Terns, Ringed Plover and Oystercatcher. These birds nest on the ground so are vulnerable to high tides and disturbance from people and dogs. Among the rarest birds have been a white-crowned sparrow from North America, a Pacific swift, a red-necked stint from Asia and a rock sparrow from southern Europe. To the eastern part of the reserve, Salthouse beach comes alive in winter when wintering snow buntings usually take up residence. In some years, rarer Lapland buntings and shore larks also join them. Although there are many species of interest using the site in summer and winter, spring and autumn are undoubtedly the best times for rarer birds to show up, but almost anything is possible at any time. we stock Opticron Adventurer II WP binoculars are supplied in a soft case with rainguard, strap and rubber objective lens covers. ideal for watching the birds feed on the marshes.

Holt

Holt is the home town to us Morston Country Sports. Holt is a lovely rural Georgian North Norfolk town with plenty of unusual shops and surrounded by well-wooded parks. Having been burnt down in 1708, Holt presents a comparatively modern appearance, with a spacious market place, dominated by a fine cross of Clipsham stone to commemorate the war dead. A jumble of streets and alleyways fan out from the main High Street, offering plenty of facilities including pubs, cafes, galleries, and shops to enjoy. There is a lovely country park just to the south of Holt and the North Norfolk Railway (the poppy line) runs from Holt station to Sheringham. Holt is particularly attractive at Christmas, when all the shops adourn themselves in pretty white fairy lights, making for a really festive wonderland. Holt is an excellent choice as a base for a short break or weekend away.
